Three CPAs walk into a bar…

…and each one brings a beer. Three small-firm owners in South Carolina, Kansas, and California, with three very different handicaps and one shared inability to stop talking about work.

Handicap

4.6

Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA, runs Better Numbers, a virtual CPA firm that handles bookkeeping, payroll, tax planning and preparation, and advisory work, mostly for creative agencies and professional services firms. He’s a Jersey guy who ended up on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He’s also a father, an HOA board member, and a former professional golfer (a smidge).

That last part mostly means his bad rounds hurt more. His index sits just under 5, which can feel like 20 on the wrong day. On the show he tends to bring the AI talk, a leadership book recommendation, and the reminder that you should actually read your own tax return.

Won a TaylorMade Qi4D driver at a charity pro-am, then got fit into an X-flex shaft, his stiffest in 20 years. The goal of the fitting: anything but left.

Hutchins & Haake

Handicap

17.2

Chad Allen, CPA, is a partner at Hutchins & Haake, a full-service CPA firm in Overland Park, Kansas, where he runs the audit and attest side of the practice. He’s done assurance work in the Kansas City area for his whole career and is a past Chair of the Kansas Society of CPAs board.

Chad lives in Lawrence with his wife, Gillian, and their two kids. He calls himself the hack of the group, and he’s in the middle of his first real swing rebuild after about three decades of teaching himself. He tracks his range reps in a spreadsheet. Of course he does. The handicap is coming down, and he’d like that noted for the record.

Is upgrading the “poor man’s simulator” in his garage so he can memorize next summer’s tournament course before he ever sees it in person.

Comeback in progress

Dalton Sweaney, CPA, is the managing partner of Gray, Salt & Associates, a CPA firm in Claremont, California, where he works mostly with small businesses and individual tax clients. He’s a Southern California native and a Chapman University grad, and in 2024 he received the AICPA Outstanding Young CPA Award.

Dalton lives in Upland with his wife, Allyson, and their four kids, one of whom has already beaten him at TopGolf. He’s working his way back from hip and quad surgery one walking nine at a time, and he’s usually the one welcoming you to the show. On the beer side, he swears the Ritual Double Red is the best red he’s ever had.

Once let his kids pick his beer based on the bunny on the label. It scored a 3.2, which tells you everything.

Beer, Golf & Business

Three CPAs who each run a small firm crack open a beer, talk golf like it’s a second job, and dig into the real business advisory questions they see every week. The golf varies. The beer gets a score.

The fine print. RDTFM is for general information and entertainment only. It’s not tax, accounting, legal, or investment advice, and listening doesn’t make any of us your CPA. Your situation is your own, so talk to your own advisor before you act on anything you hear here. The views on the show belong to the hosts, not their firms. The language is explicit. And if you’re drinking along, be 21 or older and drink responsibly.
